Course Description:
       Required of all English majors, English 301 is intended to be one of the first English courses a student takes. The emphasis is on writing based upon intensive rather than extensive reading, although selections are drawn from several major genres (poetry, fiction, drama, non-fiction). Students are introduced to basic terms and concepts of literary study and to different ways of approaching literary texts.

Hemingway, Ernest. The Sun Also Rises.
Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Murfin and Ray. The Bedford Glossary of Critical and Literary Terms.
O'Connor, Flannery. A Good Man is Hard to Find.
Plath, Sylvia. Ariel.
Williams, Tennessee. The Glass Menagerie.

Successful completion of English 101 or English 115.

Course Requirements and Grade Percentages:

• Six short essays (2-3 pages), one of which will be written in class at midterm: 60% (10% each)
• One critical research essay (7-10 pages): 20%
• Quizzes and in-class writings at the beginning of most classes: 10%
• A final exam consisting of literary terms and essay questions: 10%.

Quizzes, in-class writings, and exams cannot be "made-up." I will not accept late essays unless you have made prior arrangements with me. These are your incentives for attending class and for showing up on time.
